The Ultimate Guide to Washington Fishing Licenses for Out-of-State Anglers

Navigating the licensing requirements for the Pacific Northwest is an essential step toward a successful day on the water. Whether you are joining Riverlife Guide Service for a salmon run or a day of walleye fishing, this guide ensures you are legally prepared for the Columbia River, Snake River, and surrounding Washington State waters.

Who Needs a License?

In Washington State, everyone age 15 and older is required to have a valid recreational fishing license.

  • Youth Anglers: Children 14 and under do not need a license to fish, but they must still follow all catch limits and seasonal regulations.
  • Senior Anglers: Washington residents age 70 and older are eligible for "Senior" licenses at a significantly reduced rate.
  • Disabled Veterans: Reduced-fee licenses are available for both resident and non-resident veterans with a service-connected disability of 30% or more.

Where to Purchase Your License

For guests fishing in the Tri-Cities, Dayton, or Pasco areas, you have three convenient options to get licensed before your trip:

  1. Online: Visit the WDFW (Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife) licensing portal. If your trip requires a Catch Record Card for salmon or sturgeon, please purchase online at least 10 days in advance to allow for mailing.
  2. Mobile App: You can download the MyWDFW app to purchase and carry a digital version of your license directly on your phone.
  3. In-Person Retailers: Many local sporting goods stores, such as Bi-Mart, Fred Meyer, or Walmart in Kennewick and Pasco, serve as authorized license dealers.

Understanding Resident vs. Non-Resident Costs

Washington offers various licensing durations to fit your travel plans. Residents enjoy lower annual rates, but for travelers and visitors, the 1-Day or 3-Day Combination Licenses are the most popular and cost-effective choices. These combination licenses cover both freshwater and saltwater species, though our trips primarily focus on the freshwater systems of the Columbia and Snake Rivers.

Freshwater Rules and Special Endorsements

Because Riverlife Guide Service operates in specialized river systems, there are a few specific requirements to keep in mind:

  • Columbia River Salmon & Steelhead Endorsement: This is mandatory for all anglers age 15 and older when targeting salmon or steelhead in the Columbia River and its tributaries, including the Snake River.
  • Catch Record Cards (CRC): When you purchase a license that includes salmon, steelhead, or sturgeon, you will receive a Catch Record Card. This must be in your possession while fishing to immediately record any kept fish.
  • Species Specifics: If your goal is specifically walleye or bass, a standard freshwater license is sufficient. However, if there is any chance of hooking a salmon or steelhead, having the endorsement ensures you stay within state law.

By securing your license and endorsements ahead of time, you help ensure that once you meet Captain Leon at the boat launch, our entire focus remains on the fishing. If you have questions about which specific license to buy for your scheduled date, feel free to ask!

Washington Fishing Adventures and Scenic Gallery

Dive into the visual world of Pacific Northwest angling with our collection of moments captured on the water. This gallery showcases the rewards of being properly licensed and ready for action in the Tri-Cities region. You will see high-resolution shots of massive Chinook salmon, prehistoric-looking sturgeon, and the gleaming scales of trophy walleye pulled from the depths of the Columbia River. Beyond the catch, catch a glimpse of our professional Boulton powerboat cutting through the morning mist and the rugged beauty of the local riverbanks where wildlife often makes a guest appearance.

At Riverlife Guide Service, we want you to feel the atmosphere of the Washington outdoors before you even arrive at the dock. Browse through photos of vibrant river sunsets that paint the sky in deep oranges and purples, comfortable local riverside cabins, and iconic landmarks like the Blue Bridge in Pasco. These images represent the stress-free experience that comes with being prepared and legal on the water.
